Ballo Della Regina / La Sylphide Synopsis

Precision, speed and beauty are the essential qualities of this Royal Ballet programme. ‘Something virtuoso. Wonderful Verdi music’ was how Balanchine described his inspiration for Ballo della regina, the first of the two works. Using ballet music from Don Carlos, Balanchine fashioned choreography that requires dazzling footwork as well as precise leaps and turns from its solo couple in sections that quickly alternate in mood to match Verdi’s tuneful and varied score. The heritage of the Danish choreographer Bournonville is found in the unique delicacy and lightness of his choreography, passed down in an unbroken tradition in his home country. His La Sylphide has become one of the great classics of ballet and returns to The Royal Ballet repertory in a production by fellow Dane and Bournonville expert Johan Kobborg. It is a touching drama full of Romantic colour to tell the story of how a young man chases in vain a beautiful, elusive spirit at the cost of his happiness as well as that of his fiancée. An evening of dazzling choreography and great Romantic ballet that brings the whole Company together in style.
