Les Troyens Synopsis
Les Troyens is truly epic opera. The sheer scale of its story, music, passions, staging and performers make this a Royal Opera event of the decade and a highlight of the Cultural Olympiad. Berlioz’s great work is one of the most fabulously rich of all operas, a tour de force of passion in music and an extraordinarily demanding one for its central characters. The story is from the great Classical myths, dramatizing the fall of Troy and Enée’s (Aeneas’s) doomed aff air with Didon (Dido), Queen of arthage. It brings alive a wealth of human emotions set against the monumental canvas of the rise and fall of empires. This new production by celebrated director David McVicar is on an enormous scale for the Royal Opera House and has an extraordinary world-class cast that includes Jonas Kaufmann and Eva-Maria Westbroek. Antonio Pappano, Music Director of The Royal Opera, conducts a musical masterpiece of epic proprotions in its own right. It is famous for the most ravishing of love duets, the most stirring of martial music, the most pictorial evocations of landscape and – with the world-class Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and Royal Opera Chorus on hand – the most instrumentally brilliant of opera scores.
