Concerto / Las Hermanas / Requiem Synopsis

A rich and diverse evening of ballet to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the death of one of The Royal Ballet's greatest and most celebrated choreographers, Kenneth MacMillan.

Concerto, originally created for Deutsche Oper Berlin, is set to Shostakovich's superb Second Piano Concerto, with lustrous citrus designs by Jurgen Rose. The lively fluidity and dazzling footwork of its outer movements is sublimely contrasted with the breathtaking lyricism of the calm central movement.

Las Hermanas (1963) with atmospheric designs by Nicholas Georgiadis, was made for Stuttgart Ballet, and is based on Federico Garcia Lorca's dark and intense story of five maternally oppressed sisters, The House of Bernarda Alba. Frank Martin's Concerto for Harpsichord and Orchestra provides eerily compelling music.

The evening ends with Requiem (1976), MacMillans memorial to his friend John Cranko, set to Faure's transcendent score. Also originally written for Stuttgart Ballet, this moving and beautiful work has become a highlight of The Royal Ballet repertory.
